Training & Qualifications

Dr Dubenec’s postgraduate interests in surgery began whilst working as a resident and senior resident at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. His extensive surgical training commenced at Prince of Wales Hospital where after several years of training and after working in a Vascular Surgery unit he found a passionate interest in Vascular Surgery. In 1999 he was awarded the TOW Research Prize in the clinical division and in 2000 was co-author of the best Scientific Poster awarded at the 33rd Annual Scientific Congress of The Australasian College of Dermatologists.

After several years of training as a Vascular Surgery Registrar at hospitals including the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Liverpool Hospital and Concord Hospital, he was awarded his FRACS in Vascular Surgery by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Post Fellowship training concentrated on minimally invasive endovascular interventions such as infra-inguinal arterial stenting, recanalization of occluded vessels and more complicated fenestrated and branched aortic stent grafting for the treatment of arterial aneurysms.

Over the past decade these interests have included complex deep venous interventions for caval, ilio-femoral and upper limb venous thrombosis and also chronic venous occlusive disease which has involved Dr Dubenec lecturing and leading workshops for national and international conferences in deep venous interventions.

Dr Dubenec began working as a VMO at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2005 and since 2011 has been the Head of Department of Vascular Surgery. His research interests have continued with multiple journal publications and also International, National and Local Presentations of his research and clinical interests. He has a Masters of Medical Statistics with distinction, has lectured for the University of Sydney Masters of Surgery Degree and has been principle investigator for Royal Prince Alfred’s involvement in international trials such as the CASPAR trial, COBEST Trial and ENGAGE registries. Currently, Dr Dubenec has been the National Principle Investigator for Australia and New Zealand for the GREAT registry since 2010.

Hospitals where Dr Dubenec works are the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and The Mater Hospital located in Crows Nest.

Dr Dubenec has a strong focus on improving vascular surgery outcomes through minimally invasive procedures and continues to be involved in the evolution and advancement of Vascular Surgery by participating in committees such as the Conjoint Committee of Peripheral Endovascular Therapy, ongoing research and teaching.

Vascular Surgery involves both open surgery and endovascular (or minimally invasive) interventions. Hybrid Vascular surgery (combination of endovascular and open surgery) is also very common as it utilizes the best techniques from both areas. This is a particular interest of Dr Dubenec’s as it is an evolving area in vascular surgery, having improved vascular surgery outcomes. These types of procedures are able to be performed at the hospitals where Dr Dubenec is accredited.

Dr Dubenec's areas of special interest include:

  • Minimally invasive endovascular peripheral stenting and recanalization of arteries for occlusive disease (lower limb, carotid, renal and mesenteric arteries).

  • Endoluminal Stent grafts, including fenestrated and branched, for the treatment of aortic aneurysmal disease.

  • Early intervention for ileo-femoral  venous thrombosis and lysis treatment.

  • Chronic iliac and IVC venous occlusions.

  • Varicose vein surgery, both minimally invasive and open surgical techniques.

  • Upper limb venous thrombosis / Paget-Schroetter syndrome.

  • Extra-cranial carotid disease and stroke prevention.
